Ein ungewöhnlicher, ein Europäischer Ort.
Elba

An unusual place, a European place.
Elba

In some areas of Elba today, it is still not hard to imagine Napoleon riding round the corner on his horse - was is not a white one? At the Fonte Napoleone for instance, in the vicinity of Marciana Alta and Poggio, in the cool forests of the north side of the island. Legend says that he dismounted from his horse at the source bearing his name to take refreshment there.

The island of Elba, part of the Mediterranean world, a world from which came everything, culture, art. The Greeks, Etruscans, Romans, later the Pisans, the Medici, Spaniards and many others came to Aethalia on Ilva, as the island was once called. The city of Cosmopoli, the present Portoferraio, was the city of Cosimo dei Medici, secured with the imposing Stella and Falcone Renaissance fortresses. The power of Rome too was possibly based on the ore of the geologically interesting island. Columns from the granite of the Monte Capanne massif near Seccheto adorn the Pantheon of ancient Rome. It is most likely those very colomns we see in Thomas Struht`s wonderful photography (tableau) in his fabulous Pantheon of Rome room visualizations (1990). The legacy of the working world of the ore industry (mostly mining) in the course of a long history is still visible. Mountains were altered by the removal of the deposits, the landscape changed forever. After the closure of the mines, these areas were a much sought after destination of many mineral collectors, rocks from Elba mines now being included in collections around the world.

We have known Elba for decades, from the many journeys made there, always attracted by the spirit of Elba. You need to have been on the Voltereio, in sommer, below the entrance to the former refuge, to have sat a while, just looking, it`s totally silent except for gentle breeze. Then you get a breath of the living history of contless generations, and all of a sudden it´s clear, the never-befor explained phenomenon of times gone by in the here and now.

In 1815 Napoleon left Elba, ingeniously evading his guards. Hypothetically, a victory against the horde of opponents in Waterloo would have resulted in the Allies creating a European Union. A union of Europe, in contrast to today`s EU of Atlantic Europe. For without the largest coutry in Europe, this cannot be a true EU. And, on can presume that the apocalypse of two World Wars and the immense misery of many people would have not taken place.

So, does the real Napoleon rest in Les Invalides in Paris?
